Imrul Kayes scores 144 as Tigers set target of 272 for Zimbabwe

Opener Imrul Kayes has scored an ODI career-best of 144 helping Bangladesh to a substantial total of 271-8 after a shaky start and sudden shocks in their first match against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is Tendai Chatara picked up the wickets of Liton Das and Fazle Mahmud in the sixth over to leave the Tigers at 17-2. But opener Imrul Kayes and Mishfiqur Rahim began to rebuild, only for Mushfiq to be dismissed in the 15th over. Imrul reached his half-century in the 20th over and continued on with the help of Mohammad Mithun.

But Mithun, Mahmadullah and Mehidy Hasan Miraz were dismissed in quick succession by Kyle Jarvis, who looked to threaten Bangladeshs chances of a large total.

But a partnership with Mohammad Saifuddin eventually saw Imrul reach his century in the 43rd over and Bangladesh cross 200. Saifuddin went on to score a half-century.

The Tigers kicked off the three-match one-day international series against the visitors at Mirpurs Sher-e-Bangla Stadium on Sunday by winning the toss and choosing to bat.

Bangladesh have beaten Zimbabwe in the last 13 matches on home soil. But captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza said that the Tigers would face them with the same seriousness they showed in the Asia Cup.

“The challenge is the same as every other match,” he said. “Everyone expects us to win and we hope to do the same. That is natural. But I think that we will take up the challenge the same way as we did during the Asia Cup.”
