Zafrullah Chowdhury, the Gonoshasthaya Kendra founder, said the supporters of his political rivals attacked his organisation and filed several cases against him due to his decision to join the Jatiya Oikya Front led by Dr Kamal Hossain. He said people supporting the plaintiffs in the cases against him had planned to attack Gonoshasthaya Kendra after they failed to punish him.
“As an independent citizen of the nation, I have joined the Jatiya Oikya Front. As they could not punish me, they vandalised the organisation. It is part of their plan,” Zafrullah said in a press conference at the Gonoshasthaya Kendra Hospital in the capitals Dhanmondi on Saturday.
A case was filed against Zafrullah after his incorrect comment on the army chief during a TV programme. He was named in several cases over theft and land grab after the incident.
Later, Gonoshasthaya Kendra officials claimed that people supporting the plaintiffs of the three cases vandalised a building belonging to the organisation and occupied some of its land on Oct 27.
Mobile courts had also conducted separate operations at two centres of the organisation and fined them Tk 2.5 million on Oct 23.
Prof Altafunnesa, chief of the Gonoshasthaya Kendra trustee board, presented a written statement at Saturdays press conference over the attacks and allegations.
She claimed that the cases were filed by Zafrullahs political rivals.
Saiful Islam Shishir, executive director of the organisation, claimed that police have refused to file their cases over the attacks on Gonoshasthaya Kendra.
“We tried to file three cases with the Savar Police Station on Thursday but they did not agree to record the complaints. Only one case could be filed and we are looking to file the other two cases. If police deny it, we will take it to court."
Zafrullah also claimed that the mobile courts illegally fined the organisation.
"There is no evidence of irregularities against us. They made the fines after conducting an operation at a place where we stored discarded medicines for disposal."
Zafrullah also condemned the arrests of two Gonoshasthaya officials. He said both were forced by police to make false statements.
